As many as 150 homes were damaged by a powerful tornado that spun off a thunderstorm and plowed into the southwest city of Cape Coral, officials said. One person suffered minor injuries from flying debris.
“Water was pouring in through the windows; it soaked everything,” said Jessica Gibson, whose apartment building roof was partly torn off. Other buildings were also damaged.
The National Weather Service said the tornado started as a water spout over Fort Myers Beach and moved north into Cape Coral, with estimated wind speeds of 90 to 110 mph.
Damage could run into millions of dollars, a city official said.
