School volunteer rules may tighten
The school district is devising a comprehensive policy that would include screening for tuberculosis, fingerprinting and requiring background checks for certain volunteers depending on their interaction with students.
The policy debate was triggered by two situations. One involved a volunteer track coach who was barred from the district after a team member’s parents complained he was getting too close to her and her family.
The second case involved a volunteer wrestling coach who was arrested last year and accused of having sexual contact with boys. That case is still in court.
Some parents worry, however, that the rules are unclear and may discourage potential volunteers.
