Defense and the truth Jaywalking kills

Hit-and-run is a crime, and rightfully so, especially when injury or death results.
That said, jaywalking is illegal for a reason. The laws help to protect pedestrians by giving them guidelines for dealing safely with the potential lethal weapons driving down our roads.
I was taught to look both ways and cross only in crosswalks when the signal allowed. Today, many people use the streets as pedestrian walkways. They assume vehicles will see them and stop.
What no one has mentioned in this tragedy is that Jesus Sanchez might not have died if his family had not been jaywalking. Had the driver not left the scene, he or she might not have been charged. The car had the right of way.
