Padres pull off another 2-1 win

SAN DIEGO -- Scott Hairston hit a leadoff homer in the 10th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 2-1 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday night, their fourth consecutive 2-1 victory.

The win marked the first time in major league history that a team had won four consecutive games by a 2-1 score, according to Elias Sports Bureau.

Hairston connected on a 3-1 pitch from Pedro Feliciano (0-1) into the left-field seats to give San Diego its season-high fourth consecutive win. Beginning with their 12-9 win in 18 innings on May 25 against Cincinnati, the Padres have won nine of 13.

San Diego has played eight extra-inning games, including five that lasted 13 or more innings.

The Mets lost their third in a row after having won seven of their previous 10.

Before Friday night’s 2-1 win over New York, the Padres had never won more than two straight 2-1 games in their 40-year history. The Padres started their streak with a 2-1 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night.
