Sewage spill forces beach to be closed

A 1.75-mile stretch of city beach was closed Wednesday because of a 16,000-gallon sewage spill that occurred in Glendale and entered the Los Angeles River, an official said.
The beach is closed west of Belmont Pier to 3rd Place until further notice, Long Beach health officer Helene Calvet said.
The sewage spill, which occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday, probably did not seriously affect water quality but the beach was closed as a precaution, Calvet said.
The beach will remain closed until testing determines whether bacteria levels in the water are within state standards. Results are due this afternoon, Calvet said.
Further information about the water quality in Long Beach is available on the Department of Health and Human Services Water Quality Information Line at (562) 570-4199 or on the department’s website at www.longbeach.gov/health.
