Tough decisions

Re “Paying for California,” Opinion, June 15
A recurring theme in your description of how California governors Earl Warren, Pat Brown, Ronald Reagan and Pete Wilson handled their budget problems is that not only were they willing to make tough, sometimes unpopular, decisions, but so too were the legislators with whom they negotiated.
Today’s political climate is just a means to another end: getting reelected and passing on the making of laws to California voters with poorly written initiatives. We will only get out of this mess when real democracy returns to California and every Senate and Assembly district has healthy races each and every time we vote.
