HANCOCK’S CHANTING
I always enjoy reading about Herbie Hancock, and I liked the article “Playing Joni’s Music Again” [June 12]. I think it is confusing, though, when you quote Hancock saying: “So I started chanting three hours a day. . . .” Chanting what?
Unless one knows that he chants Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, a Buddhist meditation he has practiced for many years, it doesn’t make sense. There are about 13 million people chanting (not everyone wins a Grammy) in 190-plus countries. Check out www.sgi-usa.org.
