The Sunshine Millions, an event featuring eight races with $3.6 million in purses matching California-breds against Florida-breds, will be held today at Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park.
The 11-race card at Santa Anita includes the $300,000 Sunshine Millions Sprint at six furlongs, the $500,000 Turf at 1 1/8 miles, the $500,000 Distaff at 1 1/16 miles and the $250,000 Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at six furlongs. First post is 11:45 a.m.
The $1-million Classic, which alternates between the two tracks, tops the Florida lineup of four races, but it lost its major attraction when Go Between, the winner of the Grade I Pacific Classic, died last week after a workout.
The Sprint brings together two Grade I winners, In Summation and Georgie Boy. In Summation, a 6-year-old Florida-bred, won the Bing Crosby Handicap at Del Mar in 2007 and has run well over synthetic surfaces. Georgie Boy, a 4-year-old Cal-bred son of Tribal Rule, won the Del Mar Futurity as a 2-year-old and finished third in the Grade I Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26.
