No. 1 Santa Ana Mater Dei 102, Orange Lutheran 77.
Leading contributors: North Carolina-bound David Wear scored 26 points and had 11 rebounds, UCLA-bound Tyler Lamb had 23 points, USC-bound Gary Franklin Jr. had 21 points and Stanford-bound Andy Brown had 21 points for Mater Dei.
The scoop: Even though 6-10 Travis Wear missed the game because of illness and Lamb didn’t start because he was sick, the Monarchs won their 20th consecutive game.
FRIDAY’S RESULT
Why it matters: Mater Dei took over first place in the Trinity League on its way to a likely top seed for the Southern Section Division I-AA playoffs.
Records: Mater Dei 20-0, 5-0; Orange Lutheran 18-4, 4-1.
GAME OF THE DAY
No. 2 San Bernardino Cajon (18-0) at No. 3 Brea Olinda (17-2)
Tonight at 7:30
Why it matters: Craving some high-end competition before the playoffs and its showdown with top-ranked Mater Dei next month, the Cajon girls’ basketball team agreed to play Brea in a nonleague game. The Cowgirls feature McDonald’s All-American nominees Layshia Clarendon and Darshae Burnside, the all-time leading rebounder in the Southern Section.
