CALIFORNIA BRIEFING / SAN DIEGO

Twenty-one people were arrested Friday as officers from the San Diego Police Department and other agencies served warrants on alleged gang members suspected of assaults, robberies and drug trafficking, the department said.

Dubbed Operation Stampede, the investigation has led to the discovery of 30 weapons that were destined to be sold to criminals in Mexico, police said. Also found were a ballistic vest and numerous rounds of ammunition.

Suspects in three killings, including the gunning down of 14-year-old Javier Quiroz in August 2007, have been arrested, police said.
