Some residents of scenic Williams left their homes as a prescribed burn that grew out of control threatened the town known as the “Gateway to the Grand Canyon.”
A Kaibab National Forest spokeswoman said the so-called Twin fire had scorched about 1,000 acres and was burning forest undergrowth and ponderosa pines. Parts of Williams, about 120 miles north of Phoenix, were threatened because of strong winds. Fire officials said the conditions could compromise how much air tankers could be used to fight the fire today.
Drivers along Interstate 40 in the Williams area were advised to use caution because of thick smoke.
