Stocks rise in shortened Black Friday trading session

As consumers burst through shopping center doors to snap up bargains, some retailers’ stocks got a bump on Wall Street.
Stocks opened higher in a shortened trading session on Black Friday.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose 82 points, or 0.6%, to 12,919 shortly after the opening bell.
The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index gained 8 points, or 0.6%, to 1,399. The Nasdaq added 19 points, or 0.6%, to 2,945.
Electronics retailer Best Buy Co. Inc. rose 23 cents, or 2%, to $11.80 in early trading.
Department store giant Macy’s Inc. gained 29 cents, or 0.7%, to $41.30. J.C. Penney Co. Inc. added 35 cents, or 2%, or $17.60.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., which stirred controversy by opening its doors on Thanksgiving, said it served 22 million customers on the holiday. The retail giant’s stock added 18 cents, or 0.3%, to $69.07 in early trading.
Online retail giant Amazon.com Inc.’s stock was sliding, however. Amazon’s stock lost $1.41, or 0.6%, to $236.62 a share.
