At the recent “Game of Thrones” premiere in San Francisco, HBO Chief Executive Richard Plepler took a few minutes on the red carpet to discuss the intersection between his company and the digital technologies that are changing the way people discover and watch TV shows.
He noted that 18.5 million people have watched the “GOT” trailer for Season 3 on YouTube, and said social media has played a big role in spreading the word about the show.

On the other hand, he said “exclusivity” remains a big part of the HBO business model, at least for now. And that means it seems likely the company won’t be making HBO Go available as a free-standing services any time soon.
“We always talk about variations on a theme,” Plepler said. “Maybe HBO Go with our partners as broadband-only could evolve some day, but not tomorrow. Right now we are very excited about the enthusiasm around GO, the way our customers are embracing it.
“For right now, we have the right model.”
