Sacred spoofs

Every week is holier-than-thou week for we self-righteous pundits of journalism. And although religious satire may be met elsewhere with riotous fatwas, part of what makes this country worth sneaking into is that we tolerate, if we don’t exactly worship, graven images that spoof our spiritual beliefs.

So when John McCain goes trolling for the Rev. Jerry Falwell’s presidential support, he surely deserves to incur the wrath of skeptics. And when ancient Egyptian scrolls spin the claim that Judas Iscariot was part of an inner-circle disinformation campaign, the similarities to George W. Bush’s administration are striking.

As a faithful disciple of the visually sacrilegious, I find Ted Rall’s creation-debate spoof gloriously perfect. If, after the great global-warming meltdown, there’s room for a cartoonist or two on the outbound ark, I nominate Ted. — Joel Pett
