Oscar winner: The Classic Hollywood column in the Nov. 7 Calendar section said that 1930’s “All Quiet on the Western Front” was the first sound film to win the Academy Award for best picture. The 1929 musical “Broadway Melody” was the first sound film to receive the honor.
