Man in Athens shot twice, struck by car, then dies

A man was shot twice and then struck by a car early Saturday morning in the unincorporated community of Athens south of the 105 Freeway, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Detectives “believe he was already lying in the street when he was struck by the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle did not stop after running over the man,” a sheriff’s statement said.
The shooting occurred at 122nd Street and Western Avenue at 2:47 a.m. Saturday.
The man died after being transported to the hospital. Authorities have not identified him.
Since Jan. 1, 2007, there have been 156 homicides within 2 miles of Saturday’s shooting, according to The Times’ Homicide Report.
