L.A. city attorney sues firm that provides cyber-gambling systems

Los Angeles City Atty. Mike Feuer has filed a lawsuit against a national developer of gambling systems for its role in allegedly supplying L.A.-area cyber cafes.
“Illegal gambling can cause significant public safety problems and preys on our most vulnerable residents,” Feuer said in a statement announcing the lawsuit, which was filed Thursday.
“We are taking action against a major developer of Internet gambling systems to stem the flow of these illegal games to our neighborhoods,” Feuer said.
The suit primarily targets the North Carolina-based corporation Figure 8 Technologies for supplying L.A-businesses “with illegal gaming systems and lotteries that masquerade as lawful promotional sweepstakes.”
The suit also names five cyber cafes that allegedly operated illegal gambling using Figure 8 Technologies systems.
Figure 8 Technologies did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
[Updated, 5:20 p.m. PST, Jan. 3, 2014: John Weston, an attorney for Figure 8 Technologies, said late Friday afternoon that the corporation knows the law and would never want to be in violation of it.
“We want to make it very clear that we are quite confident that nothing in the operation of the Figure 8 software or the businesses alleged to have been using the Figure 8 software violates any state statute involving alleged gambling or any other assertion of violation of state law,” Weston said. “We are very confident that under the relevant state statues that there simply is no violation of the law.”]
