Police said seven people were shot and wounded in East Oakland in a barrage of gunfire Monday evening.
An Oakland police officer said the report of a shooting came in just after 6 p.m. in the area of 96th and Olive streets in East Oakland.
The victims’ ages and names, along with the severity of their wounds, were not clear -- nor was the circumstance of the shooting, which occurred near Verdese Carter Park.
The Oakland Tribune reported that the gunfire extended across three blocks and that, apart from the scene at 96th and Olive, there was another shooting scene not far away at 94th Avenue and Sunnyside Street.
Some of the victims were taken to Highland Hospital, according to local media reports, while others were taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley.
As of September, there were more than 3,000 gun crimes this year in Oakland, a city with a population just short of 400,000 and a reputation of being one of the state’s most dangerous.
