El Monte police shoot, kill pit bull after attack

El Monte police shot and killed a pit bull after it attacked another dog and lunged at its owner as she tried to protect the animal, authorities said.
The unidentified dog owner was walking her dog in the 11200 block of Schmidt Road about 12:30 p.m. Thursday when the pit bull leaped over a fence and bit the animal, leaving it with cuts on the head and ear, police said.
Four officers, including two from the city’s animal control division, responded to the scene after receiving a call for help, authorities said.
When the pit bull leaped at them, one of the police officers, armed with a shotgun-like weapon, shot bean bag pellets at the charging animal, authorities said.
The bean bags proved ineffective, and the two officers used their guns to shoot and kill the pit bull, authorities said. The pit bull’s owner was not home when the shooting happened but was notified of the incident.
As part of its protocol, the Police Department will review the incident.
