Bighorn sheep that escaped from zoo struck by hit-and-run driver

A bighorn sheep that escaped from the Los Angeles Zoo on Saturday afternoon was struck by a hit-and-run driver before workers could get to the animal, officials said.
The sheep was hit on a street near the zoo in Griffith Park after the animal escaped about 1:20 p.m., Lt. Richard Parks told the Associated Press.
Zoo personnel launched a search soon after the animal went missing, he said. It was not clear how the sheep managed to get out of the facility.
The driver that hit the animal fled the scene, Parks said.
The animal’s condition was not immediately known.
Zoo officials could not be reached for comment.
