Suspected street racer charged with murder after deadly crash in Hawthorne

The Los Angeles district attorney’s office Tuesday charged a suspected street racer with murder and vehicular manslaughter in connection with a crash that killed a 35-year-old man.
Alfredo Perez Davila, 23, was driving a silver Chevrolet Cobalt just before 1 p.m. Friday when he began racing a red Chevrolet Camaro northbound in the 13100 block of Crenshaw Boulevard in Hawthorne, according to the Hawthorne Police Department and prosecutors.

During the race, Davila lost control of the Cobalt and swerved across several lanes of traffic before striking the center median and becoming airborne in southbound lanes of traffic, police said.
The Cobalt slammed into a Honda CRV driving southbound. The Honda driver, Benjamin Golbin, 36, died at the scene.
If convicted, Davila faces a possible maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.
“The catastrophic force of the collision resulted in the total destruction of the Honda and the instantaneous death of its driver and sole occupant, a 35-year-old male,” according to Hawthorne police.

Video from nearby businesses showed the Cobalt rolling over the top of the Honda before coming to rest in the street, authorities said.
Davila was treated at the scene after complaining of pain and booked on suspicion of murder.
Police are still looking for the driver of the red Camaro, who fled northbound on Crenshaw Boulevard, authorities said.
“There are places to legally race,” the police department said on Facebook. “The streets where all our families drive is not one of them!”
