Readers React: L.A. County government needs an elected executive

To the editor: Thank your for your thoughtful editorial on L.A. County government. Unfortunately, the suggested cures for the dysfunctions in the sheriff and assessor departments do not address the underlying problems. (“What does Tuesday’s election mean for L.A. County?,” Editorial, Nov. 5)
The Los Angeles County Charter requires a major revision to provide for an elected executive with authority to appoint the sheriff and assessor just like any other department head. Municipal governments long ago gave up electing police chiefs, and it’s time for the county to follow suit.
Unless theses changes occur, it will continue to be the job of The Times to provide oversight of the sheriff and assessor.
