Event raises more than $350,000 for Laguna schools

Classrooms at Laguna Beach High School and Thurston Middle School will be upgraded thanks to money raised at SchoolPower’s dinner dance March 19 at the Montage Resort.
SchoolPower is a nonprofit organization that raises money for Laguna Beach Unified School District’s four schools.
The 31st annual event, titled “Calling All Superheroes,” generated more than $350,000.
The 325 attendees enjoyed dinner and a four-minute video from Laguna Beach High teachers Jun Shen and Andy Crisp that chronicled a father’s “far-fetched journey that ultimately led to the practical conclusion of investing in our schools’ future,” according to a news release.
Funds will help equip 12 classrooms and Thurston’s library with television monitors, speakers and new furniture.
“Every upgraded space means more motivated and inspired teachers and students, and any time you have that combination, high-performing kids are a likely result,” parent Brent Martini said in the release.
Remaining proceeds will be used on various efforts in the district, such as music and arts programs, class-size reductions and high school counselors.
