The Times’ 2015 all-area high school football team

ALL-AREA FOOTBALL

Offense

Running back: Sean McGrew, St. John Bosco, 5-8, 174, Sr. The Washington-bound McGrew rushed for 1,852 yards and scored 27 touchdowns for the 13-1 Braves.

Running back: J.J. Taylor, Corona Centennial, 5-6, 170, Sr. During four Pac-5 playoff games, Taylor accounted for 801 yards rushing and 16 touchdowns. He finished with 41 TDs and 2,049 yards rushing.

Quarterback: Khalil Tate, Gardena Serra, 6-0, 185, Sr. The Mission League MVP passed for 2,036 yards and 17 touchdowns and ran for 2,130 yards and 26 touchdowns.

Offensive line: Frank Martin, Mater Dei, 6-6, 295, Sr. The USC-bound Martin helped protect a freshman quarterback all season with his powerful blocking and line leadership.

Offensive line: Wyatt Davis, St. John Bosco, 6-5, 315, Jr. Davis helped St. John Bosco’s high-powered offense produce running clocks in 12 of 14 games with his agility and strength.

Offensive line: Alex Akingbulu, Narbonne, 6-6, 265, Sr. The UCLA-bound senior helped his team win a second consecutive City Section Division I championship using his athleticism and strong work ethic.

Offensive line: Luke Wattenberg, JSerra, 6-5, 275, Sr. The Washington-bound senior was the co-lineman of the year in the Trinity League and his team knocked off Orange Lutheran and Mater Dei.

Offensive line: Matt Brayton; Bishop Amat; 6-4; 300; Sr. The co-lineman of the year in the Mission League is headed to UNLV and was a two-year standout for the Lancers.

Wide receiver: Javon McKinley, Corona Centennial, 6-2, 195, Sr. Despite a banged-up body, McKinley finished with 55 catches for 1,173 yards and 12 touchdowns for the 14-1 Huskies.

Wide receiver: J.P. Shohfi, San Marino, 6-1, 190, Sr. Shohfi set a national record for most receiving yards in a season with 2,464. He also had 122 receptions for the 15-1 Titans.

Wide receiver: Michael Pittman, Oaks Christian, 6-4, 195, Sr. In his final prep game, the USC-bound Pittman caught 16 passes for 354 yards and five TDs against Bishop Amat. He had 81 receptions for 1,990 yards and 24 TDs.

Kicker: Manny Berz, Citrus Hill, 5-10, 180, Jr. Berz made 14 of 17 field goals, 87 of 88 PATs, kicked 56 balls into the end zone for touchbacks and had 18 punts end up inside the 20-yard line.

Defense

Defensive line: Oluwole Betiku, Gardena Serra, 6-6, 245, Sr. He accounted for 17 sacks and 70 tackles as one of the most feared defensive ends in SoCal.

Defensive line: Carter Hartmann, Mission Viejo, 6-3, 270, Sr. The top lineman in the South Coast League led the Diablos to a 16-0 record. He’s a straight-A student headed to Harvard.

Defensive line: Jacob Callier, St. John Bosco, 6-3, 247, Jr. Callier emerged as one of the best pass rushers in the Southland. He had 12 sacks.

Defensive line: Hunter Echols, L.A. Cathedral, 6-4, 232, Jr. Using a nonstop motor, Echols finished with 79 tackles, including 17 sacks.

Linebacker: Curtis Robinson, Mater Dei, 6-4, 210, Sr. The Stanford-bound Robinson finished with 55 tackles, including 10 sacks.

Linebacker: Mique Juarez, North Torrance, 6-2, 220, Sr. Juarez accounted for 60 touchdowns rushing, passing and returning kickoffs. On defense, he had a school-record 397 tackles in his career.

Linebacker: Josh Brown, Long Beach Poly, 6-2, 225, Jr. Brown contributed 81 solo tackles, including eight against unbeaten Las Vegas Bishop Gorman. He was known for his toughness and consistency

Defensive back: Jack Jones, Long Beach Poly, 5-11, 160, Sr. One of the most dangerous players on both sides of the ball, Jones had 42 receptions and 11 touchdowns as a receiver and also was a standout cornerback.

Defensive back: Chacho Ulloa, Corona Centennial, 6-0, 185, Sr. The Stanford-bound safety had six interceptions in helping an improved defense get the Huskies into the CIF state championship Open Division bowl game.

Defensive back: Tyler Vaughns, Bishop Amat, 6-3, 175, Sr. The USC-bound Vaughns caught 84 passes and 13 touchdowns while also contributing in the secondary.

Defensive back: David Long, Loyola, 5-10, 175, Sr. Long was so highly regarded at cornerback that few opponents tested him because of his ability to cover receivers and make tackles.

Punter: Andrew Nielsen, Hart, 5-11, 175, Sr. Nielsen averaged 43.8 yards per punt, including 12 inside the 20-yard line. He also made eight field goals and has a 4.6 grade-point average.
