Football: Javon McKinley puts on show in Corona Centennial-Santa Margarita scrimmage

If you want to know what a prep All-American receiver looks like, go watch Javon McKinley of Corona Centennial.

He was so much the best player on the field on Friday night in a scrimmage against Santa Margarita.

Coach Matt Logan, after seeing McKinley fail to score on a short pass, said, “I expect a touchdown every time he touches the ball.”

On the next play, McKinley caught a touchdown pass. He had two TD catches in the early going, but his best catch of the night didn’t count. The official ruled he was out of bounds in the end zone despite grabbing the ball while two defenders tried to stop him.

Centennial’s offense was rolling under 6-foot-6 sophomore quarterback Tanner McKee, making his varsity debut. He was filling in for senior Anthony Catalano, whose foot was in a boot after injuring it in practice. He should return next week, but McKee more than held his own.

The Huskies also showed off senior running back JJ Taylor and junior running back Miles Reed, the younger brother of former Centennial standout running back Arthur Burns.

Santa Margarita demonstrated the potential of its passing attack, with former St. Francis receiver Dylan Crawford catching a long pass from quarterback K.J. Costello. It’s still unknown whether Crawford will have to sit out the first month of the season.
