Girls’ basketball: Chaminade to play No. 1 Mater Dei for Palisades title

It doesn’t get much better than Santa Ana Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in the state, taking on talented Chaminade on Saturday night in the championship game of the Palisades girls’ baskektball tournament at 8:30 p.m.
It will be Katie Lou Samuelson, the No. 1 player in the state, going against Chaminade’s duo of Valerie Higgins and Leonna Odom, a former Mater Dei player.
On Friday, Higgins scored 21 points in Chaminade’s 64-52 win over Keppel. Samuelson scored 32 points in Mater Dei’s 67-45 semifinal win over Oaks Christian.
In consolation games, Long Beach Millikan defeated Serra, 72-67. Brijaye Brackett scored 29 points for Serra. Windward defeated Troy, 54-43. Emily Surloff had 27 points. Garces defeated Palisades, 65-41.
Saturday’s schedule: Taft vs. Palos Verdes, 10 a.m.; Agoura vs. West Torrance, 11:30 a.m.; Serra vs. North, 1 p.m.; Marlborough vs. Millikan, 2:30 p.m.; Palisades vs. Troy, 4 p.m.; Windward vs. Garces, 5:30 p.m.; Keppel vs. Oaks Christian, 7 p.m.; Mater Dei vs. Chaminade, 8:30 p.m.
