Angels defeat Padres, 7-6

AT THE PLATE: After being shut out on two hits, the Angels beefed up their lineup against San Diego with everyday players. No. 3 hitter Bobby Abreu slammed a first-inning, opposite-field home run to left off former Angels right-hander Dustin Moseley and another homer (to right-center) in the fifth off reliever Greg Burke. Erick Aybar added two hits, including a run-scoring triple and run in the second. Third baseman Brandon Wood drove a two-run homer to left-center off Moseley, who was touched for six runs before the subs migrated into the game.

ON THE MOUND: Ervin Santana gave up a second-inning solo home run to Kevin Frandsen and a leadoff double to Will Venable that set up a run. He struck out three in four innings. Reliever Rich Thompson pitched two innings, striking out three and yielding a hit and a run. Francisco Rodriguez was touched for a three-run double by Frandsen in the eighth, but rallied by striking out two to strand the runner at third.

EXTRA BASES: Santana expressed satisfaction with his infrequent use of a split-finger fastball, noting he threw it “about five times” with positive results Friday. “Confuse, confuse. … I see that little bite, it’s working where it’s supposed to be at.” Torii Hunter returned to the lineup after a Thursday bout with stomach flu.

UP NEXT: Scott Kazmir faces Cleveland and right-hander Justin Masterson at 1 p.m. Saturday at Diablo Stadium in Tempe, Ariz.
