Angels pitcher Tommy Hanson pulled because of tight triceps

TEMPE, Ariz. — Angels pitcher Tommy Hanson left Wednesday’s exhibition game against the Cleveland Indians after three innings because of triceps tightness, an injury that flared up as the right-hander was throwing his warm-up pitches before the fourth inning.

Hanson, acquired from the Atlanta Braves for reliever Jordan Walden in the off-season, gave up two runs and three hits in three innings, struck out four and walked one, and his fastball was clocked between 89-91 mph. He looked strong while striking out Nick Swisher to end the third inning.

But while warming up for the fourth, athletic trainer Adam Nevala and Manager Mike Scioscia paid a visit to the mound to check on the veteran right-hander.

Hanson, who has been slowed by shoulder tendinitis and lower-back injuries the last two years, was pulled for precautionary reasons without throwing another warm-up pitch. He is listed as day to day.

If the injury sidelines Hanson for a week or so and he is not ready to open the season, right-handers Garrett Richards and Jerome Williams would be the leading candidates to replace him in the rotation.
