J.J. Redick’s almost 11-week-old son, Knox, was taken to Staples Center on Saturday to watch his father play for the first time.
Redick went on to have his best game of the season, finishing with 30 points on 11-for-13 shooting, including making two of his three three-point shots.
But that didn’t matter much to him.
“I could have gone 0 for 30 tonight and it still would have been one of the top three or four days of my life,” Redick said. “To have my son at my NBA game, it’s incredible.”
Redick’s wife brought Knox onto the court about 12 minutes before the game. When Redick saw that, he said, he could hardly maintain his composure.
“It was one of the most surreal things I’ve ever experienced in my life,” Redick said. “I actually got emotional during warm-ups.”
During the preseason, Redick was charged with quite a few technical fouls, including a period when he picked up three over two games. At the time, he joked that Knox was to blame for his newfound temper.
“I’m a little grouchy,” Redick said in October. “I had to explain to both referees, ‘Hey man, I’ve got a newborn at home.’ ”
Sleep deprivation wasn’t in his thoughts when Redick saw his two worlds collide on Saturday.
“A ton of guys have kids in the league and all of that,” he said, adding, “but when it’s you, and it’s your kid, man, it’s the best feeling in the world.”
