Landon Donovan named to provisional Gold Cup roster for U.S.

Landon Donovan is back on the U.S. national team.

Sort of.

A 35-man provisional roster for July’s Gold Cup was released by tournament organizers Friday and Donovan’s name was on the list. But the key word here is provisional because the roster can -- and will -- change before the U.S. begins play in the tournament July 9 against Belize in Portland, Ore.

Donovan hasn’t played for the national team since August and U.S. coach Juergen Klinsmann, who said he has been following Donovan’s comeback from his self-imposed sabbatical closely, doesn’t think Donovan is fully fit yet. But with the U.S. team playing a summer schedule heavy with World Cup qualifiers, he said he would likely use a “B” team thoughout much of the Gold Cup, opening the way for Donovan’s return.

Donovan is the national team’s all-time leader in both goals and assists

Donovan’s Galaxy teammate, defender Omar Gonzalez, who is currently with the national team, was also named to the Gold Cup roster.
