International task force meets with suspended Russian track federation

A task force from the international track federation has concluded its initial visit to Russia as officials from that country seek to have their track athletes reinstated for the 2016 Summer Olympics.

The entire Russian track program was suspended from international competition after a World Anti-Doping Agency report alleged systemic cheating among its athletes, coaches and team doctors, as well as government officials.
“We have today continued our frank and open discussions with representatives of” the Russian federation, Rune Andersen, chairman of the IAAF task force, said Tuesday.
During two days of meetings, the IAAF’s independent group emphasized “the need to demonstrate a recognition of current problems and a determination to effect real and lasting change in Russian athletics,” Andersen said.

The IAAF has put forth a series of conditions that Russia must satisfy for reinstatement. The country’s track federation is scheduled to elect new officials this weekend.
