Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera expected to miss six weeks with calf strain

Detroit Tigers All-Star first baseman Miguel Cabrera was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday and is expected to miss six weeks with a left calf strain.

Cabrera suffered the injury in the fourth inning of an 8-6 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday. This is the first time in his 13-year career that Cabrera has been put on the disabled list.

Tigers Manager Brad Ausmus told reporters Cabrera is expected to miss six weeks after an MRI scan revealed he had a Grade 3 calf strain.

The two-time American League MVP is batting .350 with 15 home runs and 54 RBIs this season.

Cabrera, 32, signed a record $248-million contract extension last year and is set to earn a base salary of $22 million this season.

Minnesota Twins pitcher Ervin Santana has been reinstated after an 80-game drug suspension and is scheduled to start Sunday against the Kansas City Royals. Santana signed a $55-million, four-year contract with the Twins in December after going 14-10 with a 3.95 ERA last season for Atlanta. He went 3-0 with a 1.74 ERA in three rehab starts with triple-A Rochester, striking out 11 in 20 2/3 innings. ... Injured closer Andrew Miller threw 30 pitches in a bullpen session and could soon return to the New York Yankees. Miller has not pitched in a game since June 9 because of a strained left forearm.
