UCLA defeats Cal State San Marcos in exhibition game, 109-79

UCLA won its second straight men’s basketball exhibition game Monday, beating Cal State San Marcos, 109-79, at Pauley Pavilion.

Cal State San Marcos, ranked No. 22 in the preseason NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 poll, is coached by Jim Saia and is in only its third year as a basketball program. Saia was once an interim coach at USC, going 10-15 after Henry Bibby was fired midway through the 2004-2005 season.

UCLA will begin its regular season Friday against Drexel from Philadelphia at 9 p.m. PST.

San Diego State beat Cal State San Marcos, 81-66, in an exhibition game last week.

De’End Parker, who had been on UCLA’s roster in 2011-2012, is one of four Division I transfers on the Cal State San Marcos roster that has 11 new players from a year ago. Parker had left UCLA for the University of San Francisco.

The Bruins led, 49-39, at halftime with Kyle Anderson leading the way with 15 points and seven rebounds. Starting center Tony Parker, a sophomore who about a year ago was tweeting that he might want to go home to Atlanta, had seven points and nine rebounds.

Cal State San Marcos was led by 12 first-half points from swingman Malcolm Lemmons.

The play that brought most of the small crowd to its feet was a massive dunk by 6-foot-5 UCLA freshman Zach LaVine, two of his four first-half points.

Anderson led UCLA with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Parker finished with 17 points and 16 rebounds and David Wear almost had a double-double with 21 points and eight rebounds.
