Dan Marty Design dresses chairs with vintage sacks

Sack cloth, once a sign of humility, has been reclaimed as an eco-friendly decorative fabric that seems designed for these lean, green times. Referencing the look of muslin-covered antiques, Dan Marty’s Napoleon 3 chair, based on a French seat circa 1865-1885, is upholstered in vintage Eastern European gunny sacks used for carrying laundry and vegetables. The chair in walnut, above, is $2,850, (or $1,775 if customers provide their own fabric ). Coordinating pillows are $350 to $700. Dan Marty Design stores, 7421 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, (323) 935-5514; 1318 Montana Ave., Santa Monica, (310) 576-6008. www.danmartydesign.com. Modeled on early 20th century American bags, the newly constructed Flour Sack pillows, right, $145 each, are covered with printed hemp canvas with a feather and down fill and available from (800) 422-2770, www.sundancecatalog.com.
