Bali and Borneo: College-sponsored trip provides cultural close-up

You’re never too old to study abroad, at least not on this summer tour of Bali with a side trip to wildlife viewing in Borneo offered by Glendale Community College. Students of any age enroll in cultural geography and physical anthropology courses to go on the trip.
Bali’s culture, religion, dance and traditional ceremonies will be the focus of 15 nights in Ubud amid tours and classes led by anthropology and geography professors. Participants also spend two days teaching English to elementary school students as part of the curricula. Then it’s visits to coastal towns such as Candidasa and Lovina.
As an add-on, the group goes to Tanjung Putting National Park in Indonesian Borneo to see orangutans, proboscis monkeys and other wildlife. Orientation meetings and classes at the Glendale campus take place before the trip.
Dates: The tour runs from June 21-July 15.
Price: $3,750 per person, double occupancy, for Bali only; add $1,250 for the Borneo extension. Prices include round-trip airfare from Los Angeles, airport transfers, most meals, ground transportation, Bali-Borneo flight (if you go), park entry fees, accommodations and more. Course tuition at GCC ($216) and airline taxes are extra.
