Canada: Curling championships headed to B.C.

Many of the world’s finest curlers will gather in Victoria, British Columbia, March 30 to April 7 for the Ford World Men’s Curling Championships. Although the sport isn’t one that’s followed closely by Americans, the United States will be among the nations’ fielding teams.
The games will be held at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, where athletes using brooms will move curling stones across the ice toward a circular target.
A total of 12 countries – including Canada, Japan, Russia, Scotland and Switzerland – will participate. Some of the curlers have represented their homelands in the Winter Olympics, which have included curling since 1998.
Fans of the sport may want to visit Victoria’s legendary grand dame – the Fairmont Empress hotel – during their stay to see original watercolor portraits of some of the game’s greatest players.
Artist Jayné Childs will return to her hometown to exhibit her portfolio of curling champions from around the world. The paintings will be display from March 23 to April 8 in the historic hotel’s conservatory. The gallery will be open from noon to 8 p.m. daily, except on Easter Sunday, March 31.
