Las Vegas: Mob lawyer, then mayor, celebrates new job as memoirist

Oscar Goodman, the former mob lawyer-turned-mayor of Las Vegas, will showcase his latest career as an author, during the three-day “Being Oscar Bash” May 23-25 at the Mob Museum in downtown.

The event comes on the heels of the Tuesday release of Goodman’s new memoir, “Being Oscar: From Mob Lawyer to Mayor of Las Vegas — Only in America.” The book leads readers on a tour through organized crime’s inner sanctum before chronicling Goodman’s three terms.

The bash kicks off on the evening of May 23, with reduced ($10) admission to the museum, housed in the city’s former federal courthouse. At 7:30 p.m., Goodman will speak in the courtroom in which he worked as a defense attorney for accused gangsters.

On Friday, May 24, museum admission will be free to guests who buy a copy of the book for $28.11. Goodman will make half-hour presentations in the courtroom at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. The talks are open only to book buyers. Afterward, he will be available for book signings.

There will be further opportunities for autographs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 25, when patrons will again get free admission with the purchase of the book. Goodman will also judge a “Being Oscar” look-alike contest.

The Goodman legacy continues in Las Vegas. His wife, Carolyn, is now mayor. Oscar continues to have a cult following as the city’s official ambassador, with showgirls accompanying him to various public appearances.
