World agricultural output must increase by as much as 60% over the next 15 years to feed the exploding population of the Third World, a U.N. report in Nairobi, Kenya, said. The report said that by the year 2000, the world’s population is expected to top 6 billion people, about 1.3 billion more than now, with 86% of that in the Third World. Unless food output rises at a rate that seems out of reach--the worldwide growth rate was only 2.2% in the 1970s--an estimated 10% of those people will starve.
