Florida Gov. Bob Graham refused to release from prison a 76-year-old man serving a life sentence in the “mercy killing” of his terminally ill wife, but he urged his Cabinet to reconsider its refusal to free the man. Roswell Gilbert is seeking a 60-day reprieve from prison while he appeals his first-degree murder conviction. Graham asked the independently elected Cabinet, which turned down Graham’s request to free Gilbert by a 4-2 vote last month, to consider the request again. Three of the six members of the Cabinet would have to vote for the conditional commutation, which would let Gilbert post bond.
