School Board OKs Bonuses to Spur Early Retirement

LONG BEACH — The school board, in a cost-cutting move, has decided to offer bonuses to some administrators and teachers to encourage early retirement.
Twenty-five administrators, age 55 or older, will be offered a bonus of half their annual salary to retire by June 30. A smaller number of teachers will be offered 16% to 25% bonuses, based on years of service. Long Beach Unified School District officials said they hope the plan will save at least $500,000.
Supt. E. Tom Giugni said the district is not “management-heavy” but acknowledged that “we have enjoyed a level (of managers) that is not enjoyed by other districts.” He said the effort is simply a budget cut.
Several teachers protested the plan, arguing that managers are receiving the “golden parachute.”
