Irvine Valley College has awarded 130 scholarships totaling $55,000 to students in various departments throughout the campus.
About 115 students received scholarships, which were presented at an awards ceremony last month.
The scholarships were granted based on financial need as well as academic performance. Much of the money was raised by the Irvine Valley College Foundation, a nonprofit group that collects money for college programs.
Money for the scholarships came from college teachers, staff members, fellow students and the community.
About 200 students applied for scholarships this spring, an increase from the 100 applicants in 1993.
The average cost for a full-time student to attend the college is $1,072 a year.
