Valley to Host City’s Arts Education Fair

More than 30 cultural and educational organizations will present information on special programs for youths, parents and educators Thursday at “A Day in the Park: Educational Resource Fair.”

The free event is often held in October in Los Angeles, but will take place in the San Fernando Valley for the first time this year.

The fair, sponsored by the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department, “will introduce teachers, parents and their kids to different enrichment programs they can get involved with in the Valley,” said Carla Fantozzi, manager of the city’s Youth Arts and Education Department. She added that the Cultural Affairs Department anticipates more than 1,000 visitors to the event, which also includes workshops for teachers and parents emphasizing projects that can be taught in classrooms.

“We’ll be concentrating on different audiences with different activities throughout the day,” she said.

Among the organizations participating will be the Art of the Dance Academy, California Poets-in-Schools, Flights of Fantasy Story Theater, the International Greek Folklore Society and Wildlife on Wheels. Free copies of the A-Z Educational Resource Guide, which lists cultural groups throughout the Valley, will also be available.

The event will be held from noon to 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodley Avenue Park, 6350 Woodley Ave., Van Nuys. At 3:20 p.m., the Shaluza Boot Dancers will perform dances that originated with South African mine workers.
