First-Graders Get Started Early on Volunteer Week

They pledged to clean their rooms and do the dishes, to help elderly people across the street and to become doctors and teachers when they grow up.
In a prelude to National Volunteer Week starting April 20, several dozen first-graders from Heninger Elementary School gathered at City Hall on Wednesday to commit themselves to a lifetime of good deeds.
Some adults made promises themselves, including Mayor Miguel A. Pulido Jr. who said he’d do his part to help the children of the city realize their dreams.
He cited city efforts to create more after school programs and to improve community centers.
“They have said they want to be good. They don’t want to join gangs and do drugs, and we have to find a way to help them,” Pulido said.
The mayor stressed that helping children grow up to be good citizens will take a massive effort from schools, parents, business and, perhaps most importantly, an army of volunteers.
