A UC Davis researcher was arrested after valuable material intended for use in laboratory research was found in his home.
Bin Han, 40, will be charged with embezzlement and theft of trade secrets, said campus police spokesman Paul Pfotenhauer.
Han is part of an Ophthalmology Department team researching a new technique to reconstruct the cornea. A breakthrough could be worth millions of dollars.
After receiving a tip from team researchers Friday, police found 20 vials of human proteins stored in Han’s freezer. They also found data related to the project and a plane ticket in his name for a Sunday flight to China.
Han, a naturalized U.S. citizen from China, has worked at UC Davis since 1990. He is being held in the Yolo County Jail without bail.
